Thread: Call for testing on Motorola PowerPC machines

I'm looking for anyone who has a Motorola, or other machine
with PPCBUG
firmware to test boot the following kernel and send the
complete output to me.
I am hoping to improve support for these machines, and if
your machine can boot
the image and produces viable output, it should be
supportable under
NetBSD/prep.

http
://www.garbled.net/tmp/prep-residual-boot.fs

I am especially interested in any MVME160x machines, or
MPC82xx machines. I
also suspect that the image will work on a Motorola
Powerstack II with ppcbug.

This image will not work on boards with DINK32 or
OpenFirmWorks (unless they
also have PPCBUG, in which case you need to boot the image
from PPCBUG)

The image is a complete netboot image, kernel and all in one
file. You should
be able to netboot it directly. I use the following line in
/etc/bootptab to
netboot these images:

botien:\
 :sm=255.255.255.0:ht=ethernet:ha=000629ba4bf0:\
 :gw=192.168.10.11:ip=192.168.10.29:bf=boot.fs:rp=/usr/src/d
istrib

(just place the image in /tftpboot/boot.fs, and enable
bootpd and tftpd in
inetd.conf)

Would the original Powerstack (the DeathStar model) also
possibly support
the image? I know it has OFW (and should be supported by
NetBSD/ofppc,
although I haven't yet tried that), but I'm not sure
whether or not the
PReP port should be able to run on it?

Umm.. NetBSD/prep does support the old powerstacks, and the
old motorola
ultras. (the E0 and E1 powerstack models). I've never
heard of an old
powerstack having OFW, but I guess one could exist.

The general rule is that the firmware determines if it runs
ofppc or prep. If
it's PPCBUG, it will run under prep. If it's OFW, it will
have to be ofppc.
If it's DINK32, you're on your own.

So, if your powerstack really does have OFW, and no way to
get to ppcbug, then
NetBSD/prep won't run on it. Otherwise, AFAIK powerstack
1's and 0's are
allready fully supported by NetBSD/prep.

Yes, some of the old powerstack boards ran OFW. I believe
that you
can simply swap the boot proms/flash for PPCBUG boot
proms/flash.

Cheers,
Michael
