Can anyone point me some Xen hosting providers that support
NetBSD?

I will be glad to compile the results and post to a wiki.

  Jeremy C. Reed

p.s. I currently have two Xen providers. One hosting Debian
Linux for
around 18 months and another hosting NetBSD for around 8
months. The
Debian provider seems reliable but doesn't offer NetBSD. The
NetBSD
provider is knowledgable but is understaffed for responding
to support
issues -- causing significant downtime on several
occassions. (Maybe the
Debian provider is understaffed too, but I don't know
because I haven't
frequently needed assistance there.) Since I have provided
my own hosting
service (not Xen) for over six years and have done
consulting for many
webhosts for ten years, I know what it is realistic for
uptime and
availability. Many of my own servers and customers' servers
have had 100%
(and most with 99.99 or better) availability for different
years.

See Hubert's mail. I'm currently with Panix.com; paid for a
year in
one shot for the disk space bonus.

Though my panix domu recently restarted twice in 3 days due
to
SAN problems. I was not notified of either event. Had you
asked
me a week ago, I would have been very happy with panix.
Now, I'm
not so sure.

There's a mix of "real" colo and Xen
"colo" providers here:

And I still haven't heard back from my email sent Thursday
(asking why I
wasn't notified of the first two reboots (December and last
Monday-ish))
or the email I sent Friday (asking why, again, my server was
rebooted).

Apparently (so says their phone message) it was a SAN
failure. Again -
that's 3 times in as many months.

Between that and the absolutely abysmal service I have
recieved from Qwest
I'm looking at colocating one of my own servers.

I brought this thread to their attention, and that's when
the list
botch was noticed and fixed Real Quick. I've now received
the outage
information mail, and David should have received it by now
too.

As I mentioned privately to the Panix staff, I know that
these things
do happen -- and what I didn't tell them is that I've had
much worse
luck with a couple of their competitors in the Xen hosting
market. I
found out later that one of those competitors was using
refurb
cobbled-together Pentium-3 boxes with just a pair of EIDE
drives in
each box; for that kind of reliability, I might as well
colocate my
own el-cheapo box.

That aside, I've had more than my share of hardware problems
with
colocating my own box, which is what makes the Xen hosting
concept
such a huge win for me. Zero hardware maintenance work
makes for a
lot less headache, even when failures do happen.

And i've brought it to their attention, too :] I wouldn't
have
been nearly so ticked off, except I brought it to their
attention
that they weren't notifying me back in /December/ when the
dom0
hosting my vcolo fell over.

All that said, they have, since acknowledging that this is
a
problem, resolved it very professionally. I have recieved
the
emails detailing the new policies put in place and I think
they're moving in the right direction. In addition, they
contacted me privately. I've heard horror stories about
other
colo providers, too, and I'm happy with the service I've had
from
Panix.

And thanks to the folks that intervened on my behalf :]
