Also, this seems to occur either before or after probing my
USB
trackball, for what it's worth.

The acsii logo was there before as well. What changed is
that now the
default vga mode is 80x50 when it was 80x25 before (with
80x25 it's possible
you didn't have time to see the text logo 
You can add:
vga=text-80x25
to the xen.gz boot options; it will keep the default VGA
mode which netbsd
expects.

Great, thanks. It worked and the VGA console is again
usable.

I still have to press a key booting the new kernel when it
detects my  
USB HDs...
