This is an important client and we are not going to be flip and just tell
them to stop sending themselves confirmation email. We are trying
to confirm for them and us that the problem is NOT in Surgemail. So
far the only email we have been able to track appeared to be at least
delivered to the in box. They didn't get it. I do plan to
find the next login for this account in the log to see if the message was
shown as delivered. Right not we don't have the clear answer to the
problem. We would like very much not to lose this client. We
don't think giving them access to logs is going to help. As you
say, they are not going to be able to make any sense out of
them.

We no longer investigate
these.
In short, we tell our customers "Your proof of delivery is that a
copy of the message is saved in the Sent items. Don't be sending
yourself emails."
If you want, give the customer access to their logs page. Generally
we only give Advanced users access to the logs page because the novices
get confused with all the RBL & challenge listings. We have
created a Group with logs access and just add that group to their current
group.

Subject: [SurgeMail List] Logging incoming and outgoing email for
a specific domain
I am looking for some suggestions on a problem we seem to
have with one domain. We have a group of accounts that are
sending a lot of email between themselves as well as out of
the surgemail server. If one of them sends an email he will
usually send a copy to himself at an external email address
as well as to his account under the surgemail domain.
External accounts include yahoo.com etc. They claim to be
seeing a lot of cases where the copy to yahoo gets though
but the copy sent within the surgemail domain account is not
"received". Naturally they sometimes don't tell us
about
the problem until a few days after the fact so the mailn.log
files are no longer available for detailed investigation.
One I was able to follow showed that Surgemail beleived the
message was successfully placed into the inbox. But the
client still claimes he never received it. We are trying to
find out if there is a common anti-spam or anti-spyware etc.
module they may be using.
The questions.
1. Has anyone experienced this sort of behaviour and what
did you find.
2. What recommendations do the more experienced have with
regard to tracking the cause of this problem.
3. Is there a way to track every sent and received email for
a specific domain. I have used what I thought should do
this on one domain, but it is very clear that not all
traffic gets recorded.
4. Would it be better to investigate this sort of behaviour
through the historical summary log files than through the
regular mail.log files? The latter are a major pain to read
given all the detailed data that is recorded.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but each account can generate an
emailed log.
While I understand that the customer can get confused by looking at the
whole log, the log that is emailed can have bounces, SPF etc. excluded
so that the only things in the emailed log are the messages that are
ALLOWED (received). The log emails could be archived by the customer so
that it could go back weeks or months. I have mine sent to me once a
day.
I don't see that it can be made to show what was sent by this customer,
though.
