Actually, that's not true at all, the x64 instruction set is
*true*
64bit. It's not "two 32bit processors running in
tandem". True that is
has 32bit compatibility mode, but that doesn't mean it's
32bit at all.

Applications really only need to be complied 64bit if they
want to take
advantage of higher memory space or longer integers, etc.,
other than
that, the application really doesn't gain much by being
"64bit".
