Have you verified that is in fact the problem?

I can't figure out what setting to change in Thunderbird. I did however find how to do some logging with Thunderbird and find "authenticate CRAM-MD5" in the log for the old mail server.
I also searched the mail list archive on the web site and found other's having this error also:

Forget Thunderbird.

The information you provided clearly shows that Surgemail is
not
offering TLS or SSL, which means it's not setup correctly
there.

When you "used your old certificate" did you also
remember co copy in
the private key with it? If you're not doing per virtual
host ssl, I
believe you'll find your cert/key pairs in:

/path/to/surgemail/ssl/surge_cert.pem (your cert)
/path/to/surgemail/ssl/surge_priv.pem (your key)

If those are not a valid set, you can forget about anything
working.
