NetWin folks,

I was curious as to wether your company can provide some
kind of
roadmap as to what we can expect out of future versions of
your
products. You've mentioned a new WebMail briefly on the
list. What
kind of improvements will this new WebMail provide? Is
SurgePlus
still being actively developed? Are you going to improve it?
For
SurgeMail, can we expect an overhauled and simplified web
interface?

Thanks for any hints you can throw our way.

Regards,
Aaron

In the next 2 years, I expect to see more use by SmartPhones, like the two units being sold by Sprint.
Goto any Sprint booth in any mall & ask to see their SmartPhones.  I tested two units this past Saturday.  Pricing is $299 for the unit, $35 for basic Sprint service and $15 for full, unrestricted, internet access, including email - and via touch-screen to boot.
It no longer makes sense to pay $600 for a desktop computer or $1000 for a laptop computer, when you can log in from almost anywhere in the USA.
Therefore, I see more use of Server-side applications with emphasis on low-bandwidth interfaces.

In addition to low-bandwidth email, I anticipate the ability to move photos & short movies from places like Kodak.com into your photo directory remotely via these cigarette-box sized units.
As such, SurgeMail, SurgePlus, etc. will want to start building a place for the customers to store URLs and any Login & passwd for those other remote services.  Customer then needs to only visit their webstore and click on a button to remotely retrieve any such files.  Click on another button and see a slideshow of the photos.
... and that's just one of the neat little server-side applications that people will want.

Another cute little tool is a hand-held GPS device with a removable SD card; for $150. ; It runs on two 9v batteries and doubles as an mp3 player.  You'd be able to put mp3's into your webstore, then copy them onto your handheld device a dozen at a time to play.
It's only a matter of time until the SmartPhones above include GPS too.
If Surgemail could receive a unit's GPS location when an email is sent or received, parents would know where their kids are, or stolen equipment could be recovered.  Even a simple "Send GPS Location" button could help 911 in emergencies.

Imagine that a website owner can walk down a street and record the GPS locations of restaurants in your area, then make that data available via a website database.  Then imagine visitors googling your page and walking down the row of shops while on vacation, to find a particular restaurant, or listening to the audio explaining the store's products as you walk past that store... etc.

In theory, it will be much nicer to use (faster/ more
interactive / more
similar to a local application)

Currently no, at the moment we are waiting to decide on a
future
direction for it.

As above, undecided at this time.

For users, probably yes, as that will grow out of the new
webmail
interface with time.

For the admin, less likely, we are more likely to make
incremental
changes rather than redesign the interface itself.

Great to hear. Something AJAX-y would be a great addition.

I think the WebMail rewrite would be a great opportunity to
merge
SurgePlus
functionality into your product to create a great groupware
solution.
Something
along the lines of calendar/file sharing. More and more
people are
wanting this,
and basic webmail is going to be obsolete very quickly.

Well the user side is certainly more important. But I find
that the
admin interface
can be very daunting for new admins. I am constantly
clarifying
things to my clients
who I've turned on to SurgeMail.

Thanks,
Aaron
