Thanks! I find an x86 version for solaris. Does anyone knows where surgemail (path) stores the users emails and settings? Do you think if I transfer the entire (surgemail) directory from the working server to the temporary server It should work without major problems? Thanks!

My situation is a little diferent. The current server is a SunFireV250
running solaris 10 with a Sparc cpu. Now the temporary server will be a Dell
running solaris 10 with a Intel cpu. Since they have the same OS i dont have
a problem but the CPU is different. I dont know if surgemail for solaris is
available for x86 cpu Does anyone have an idea? Also where can I download
previous versions of surgemail since my version is the 3.8f3-3 Jan 12 2007
and I dont find the link on the site?

Thanks!

I'm in a default configuration actually, where ever Surge want's to
install, I just don't put it on C with the OS. We're small, in
company. BUT, we have an FTP server on that same old box that has
built-in packet shaping/data throttling, and when there is a file
coming in or out, it pegs the CPU at 100% with the overhead. Plus,
the box is getting long in tooth, and needs to be retired.

>From one of out other companies, we just got in a collection of nice
"modern" hardware I'm going to re-purpose. One of which was an
Exchange Server <sly smile>. It's only licensed for 25 users, so it's
going to be uninstalled/removed from the box as I go forward.

Thanks

Yeah I did, up from 2K to 2K3 - That kind of change should give you a
real nice boost.

But don't forget - not only drive letters but folder structure.

No biggie if you have them both like d:surgemail On mine I organized
web content & mail in a better folder fashion, so either way it altered

for me.

Since it's easy to resize/partition the new system, I'll just make
sure the drive letters are the same prior to the install on the

replacement box.

Did you change OS's at the same time as well? I'll be going from a
win2k box to an 2k3 box. Celeron PIII900 to P4 Zeon 2.8gig.

Oo good point - I forgot about that part.

After installing, then copying over the directory - then I edited
surgemail.ini to update any new drive path locations.

Then the tellmail deactivate, activate.

It did cause a little bit of downtime as I stopped surgemail on old
server prior to copying over the mail directory - but not much really
and it was nothing too bad for my level of activity.

Did you have to maintain same Drive letter placement? I'm in a
similar situation, only on the old server, Surge is on F. I can
duplicate that on the new server. Probably best to do that though.

I did this going from a W2K to W2K3 machine a few months back. Some
people do a mirror type of setup - but I didn't try that myself - I
did the copy method.

Installed Surgemail (same version) on new server, Copied entire
surgemail directory from old server to new one.
Tellmail deactivate on old server
Tellmail activate on new server
Up and going.

I actually tried to not carry forward any redundant stuff and
selectively copied over directories. Lead to a bunch of junk problems
here and there so ended up copying over everything.

Hello everyone.

I have a situation. I need to reinstall the OS on this server and Im
planning to install temporary the surgemail on other server until I
finish with this one. Is there any easy way to transfer the settings
already made and user accounts / mailboxes to the other server easily?

on Windows it's the setting g_mailbox_path that indicates where.

I've never used Solaris - but you can do that with Windows. I would suggest setting it up and testing it internally - then switch over public. You'll be fine testing for 30 days - just hold off on the tellmail deactivate, etc until it's good.

And if your testing, and all is good - than you very well may want to just recopy the directory again to make sure you get the latest in emails, etc.

Or try the mirroring aspect.
