It sounds like some of the spam checking tests are taking
too long, this 
may indicate a dns server issue.

The first step is to examine mail.log, find the thread that
is accepting 
a message slowly and search for that thread id in mail.log
so you can 
see exactly where the delay occurs,  This may indicate a
fault with your 
dns server or authent module etc.

Also check the 'status' output while the delay is occuring,
this also 
helps give a clue as to what the channel is doing.

If you are still stuck after that send me the results of the
above info
    tellmail status
    mail.log of slow thread
    and surgemail.ini
