A catcher is an email address on your system, i.e. yourdomain">bobyourdomain that will block emails from that IP address for X minutes (or hours) per your settings.
g_spam_catcher

Plus, if you have any old accounts that have been closed 6 months or more, you can goto the Redirect page and redirect mails coming into fred to the bob account, thereby blocking the brain-dead sender.  (Some senders never update their lists.  Such senders never send useful info anyway, so what the heck.)

So if an address (or domain) has ever sent a mail to a catcher, it will get 3 points?

If an *IP address* ever sends to the catcher, yes, the Aspam function will add the assigned number of points.
AOL, MSN, Hotmail, Yahoo, and lots of legit mailing lists are guilty... so my suggestion is to let it at three points and move on.

Generally, you don't want to remove the "free email" domains from the list - because it's useful in detecting scams... many scams coming from all of the free email services.
However, points only apply to senders that are not yet on the recipient's Whitelist... as once a sender is authenticated through the Friends system, the [spamgrade] system no longer acts on the spamgrade.
I've seen legitimate emails receive a spamgrade of 15 or 19, which is why (in a previous email) I mentioned that we (here at 1USA) push certain things like "multi.surbl.org" up above the spamgrade of 30, 35, 40, etc. - to make sure they get bounced or dropped, regardless of the customer's settings.

A sender gets onto the recipient's whitelist by:
- outbound:  the customer sending an email TO that person/email address
- inbound: the sender clicks to confirm they are not a robot
- the customer goes into Friends Pending folder and manually releases the messages; at which time the customer can choose to release one particular email or to also receive all future emails from that sender.

It is important for our customers to be in control of their mailboxes... not the senders.  No sender should be able to 'push' their way into your mailbox.

Spam Farms use the same domain names, but different addresses, coming from different IP addresses. (mostly infected broadband connections.
Spam Farms use the same /24 IP address blocks for a day or two, and change their domain names daily.
A   /24 is (example)  199.224.105.1 through 255

I know this is much more than you asked for... but it's important to see how it fits into the mix.

In addition to 3 points being added by "Has Sent to Catcher", search through your mbox dir for x-FriendsScore or x-Spamdetect scores for "share market scam".  I've found ; that QVC.com's emails and some legit Newsletters get tagged with that.
No big deal if your system has Friends turned on... because Friends over-rides the scores.
