He wants Surgemail to use a port other than 110 for mirroring as he wants to have his AV product proxy traffic on port 110 and that interferes with mirroring.

IMHO, you are just asking for trouble letting your AV product proxy port 25 or port 110 on a mail server.  I see enough problems on end user's machines because of that stupid proxying in order to scan email traffic.  I predict many many problems using a desktop AV product on a mail server.  You need an AV product designed to hook into your mail server directly.

I don't understand your last paragraph.  What will the 'user-defined setting' do?  Do you mean to "process the mirrored files through the anti-virus software"?

Subject: [SurgeMail List] Surgemail Mirror Setup WORKS!!

Hi guys,

Thanx for excellent help (I unfortunately overlooked yesterday's post from
Stuart when I wrote my post earlier today).

The reason was exactly as Stuart suggested: There was an external
antivirus-program on the Master which had hold of port 110. Once that was
uninstalled, things suddenly started to work just fine.

In the course of setting up things, I have noticed (and again today) that
the "Mirror shared secret" password has a tendency to disappear in the GUI,
being replaced by an "=" sign. Dunno why this happens though.

I also need to request a user-defined setting specifically for mirroring
port(s): Not only will this enable external antivirus-mechanisms to work on
standard mail ports, it will also enable firewall/routing control mechanisms
to be used and thus improving overall security.

Best regards,
Robert

Hi Barry & Lyse,

I would like to see SurgeMail use a port other than 110 for mirroring. Not necessarily because of AV, but because it IMO is safer and better to manage mirroring-related traffic on a port with one-off origin and one-off destination.

While I agree that an AV designed to hook into SurgeMail directly is nice, professional server side AV products which proxy ports 25 and 110 also have their advantages.

Best regards,

Robert

and just another observation, most ALL the email problems I have with people not able to send/receive email are ALL related to proxies on ports 110 and 25.  Symantec being by far the most egregious in that regard.

I can honestly say, that with the built in AVAST in Surge, we've had zero virus emails passed on to client computers.
