Is anyone experiencing email duplications?

I am starting to have numerous users complaining that their messages are downloading “again” and “again” each time they check their messages.  So as you could imagine they are ending up with hundreds of emails to go through and delete.

We are seeing it with various versions of Thunderbird and MS Outlook.  One common thing is that they all leave messages on the server.

We are using the Linux 38q version of Surgemail.

If you use POP3 and leave messages on the server, that will happen from time to time. ; The client tries to keep track of messages by message number and it will get out of wack and make the client think all messages are new.

Upgrading your Surgemail exe can cause this. ; Restarting the server can cause this. ; But I get it usually when I have to change the Surgemail executable and I could cause that to happen with other mail server software.  So it's not limited to Surgemail.

It's one of the hazards and drawback to leaving messages on the server AND using POP3 to download their messages.  They would be better off using IMAP in offline mode if you don't restrict their server space for mail.

This is a bug with some recent versions, the problem was
the imap/pop protocols used to use a conflicting naming
scheme, while improving imap we decided to make the naming
scheme's match so that it wouldn't ever make mistakes

But, in the process of fixing it, the pop uidl names had to
change and that meant it should have re-downlaoded
everything 'once', we belatedly realized this was very
annoying for some people and fixed it so it only did this if
the
user was using both imap and pop (which should be relatively
rare) (this is in new builds after the one you have)

So, yes such a fault existed, but not quite the way you
describe, it shouldn't be repeatedly doing this. But
possibly
the users are miss reporting or aborting it part way or
something like that. Or there may be a another fault. (or
there
may have previously been another fault in this area which
we've since modified)

I've just restested all this and it seems to now work ok as
above so only people who use imap should get a problem and
it should only re-download existing messages 'once'. So try
this new build and if you can confirm it does download any
inbox more than 'one' extra time then please let me know

I've installed the new build and will give it a try. We'll
take a second
look at the "repeated" duplications. The users
"aborting" the download is a
good possibility.
