No immediate ideas, take a look at the mail.log to see if
that is reporting 
any errors. Also try running your authentication module
manually on the 
command line to see if that is working correctly if you
install the freebsd 
6 version. For more info on the authent modules see:

Also make sure you let us know what the actual error
messages logged / your 
users get are to offer more meaningful comment.

Netwin had to send me a new nwauth module after we upgraded
from FreeBSD 
4 to FreeBSD 6.

It sounds like this new module didn't make it into the main
distribution.
