One of the thing I suggest to people asking advise on
computers, is ONLY buy
one that offers XP as an installed or "upgrade"
option.
There are still tons of them out there. NEC just announced
they're going to
be shipping a dual DVD with all their laptops offering a
full XP install if
you want it.
We have actually not purchased any "New"
computers, we mostly purchase "Like
New", or Refurbs from the Dell Used store. There are
tons there that all
have XP-Pro installed.
A recent article just came out, that showed I believe 3-5%
adoption in major
corp environments, and interviews stated that most were
going to sit the
Vista upgrade out, and wait for the next iteration.
As to Ram, 3-3.5gig is typically the max a 32 bit OS will
recognize, unless
it's a server version that has special things added. We've
got an 8 CPU
Dell, that has 16 gig of ram in it, totally useable by
Windows 2000
Enterprise Server. We've got SQL loaded on that box, and it
runs using all
the Ram. The desktop OS's unless 64 bit, don't go over the
3.5gig size.

Just to stick my oar in here, unless you go to 64-bit Vista,
most
motherboards will only recognize about 3 GB of memory. Vista
(32 bit) is way
too cramped in 1 GB, but runs reasonably in 2 GB.
Ditto on the Vista downgrade warning. When I tried this on a
brand new HP
laptop, there were almost no XP drivers available. Went back
to Vista with
extra RAM.
