this is very strange.....
one of my customers has started receiving messages like
this:
The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:
'[elided]' on 2/28/2008 3:13 PM
550 relaying blocked, read new mail, add
68.92.8.162 to forwarding or enable smtp authentication in
intermittently when sending mail. they've not told me of
any particular
pattern (i.e. specific recipients or specific senders)
the ip above is the address of their firewall appliance.
we haven't changed surgemail's config in some time - other
than adding
new customer domains.
can anyone shed some light on what might be causing this?

Is this an authentication error?
Do they have the "my server requires authentication" check in m$
outlook? Or whatever client they are using?

normally you are allowed to smtp for x number of minutes
after you
have authenticated when checking your pop account.
the customer will be able to send email if he downloads
email first.
see g_relay_window - Minutes to allow relay after pop/imap
login NOT
RECOMMENDED. you are better off using smtp auth

we have used smtp auth ever since we satrted with dmail
(surgemail's
predecessor). the problem is purely local to a few machines
(not all)
at this one particular customer. i've concluded that it must
be a local
problem and have resolved it (at least temporarily) by
adding some ip
addresses to my relay_allow list.
