Basic Spam filtering question

Hi all,

just running a small home surgemail windows server here,
very happy with it. 
Until know I had spam under control, but I upgraded from 38K
to 3.9a-1 and 
I'm being inundated with spam.

Previously I had whitelisting(?) setup as per a technote I
can't find anymore. 
Only emails on my approved list got through - now I'm
getting mail from all 
and sundry.

Could someone point me to the right settings?

I think you were using the Friends system.
