messages? |

we've recently started running surgewall for a customer who
has their
own exchange server.
they've asked a question that i can't answer:
if their server is unreachable, will surgemail queue the
message as it
would for other messages it can't deliver immediately?
if not, does surgemail notify the originating server so IT
can queue and
retry later?

I have a similar question because I have track I want to
pursue where this
information might play a part.
Can Surge Mail be used to spool mail?
I sell spam filtering services (Barracuda) as well as SM
mail hosting. Many
of my clients just want me to filter their mail and forward
it on to their
Exchange servers. The Barracuda will spool mail for 72
hours if their
server goes down but I would like to use the SM system as a
backup to my
Barracuda if it were to fail (while I get it fixed). Other
than the DNS
redirect from my temporarily expired Barracuda, could I get
the SM system to
spool or redirect my Barracuda Only client mail? How might
someone
temporarily set something like that up?
My system has the Barracuda receiving all inbound mail on
the periphery and
forwarding either to the SM or back out to outside clients.
I know plenty
of people feel the SM should be out front... it's just how I
have it. An
answer to David's question and constructive suggestions are
welcomed.

Yes, SM does spool email when an offsite server is down. It
does not
matter to SM if the mail came and we are going to redirect
it back out
or if it came from a client to be sent back out.
For back up to your barracuda, go to Global --> Message
Deliver -->
Scroll down to Gateway and click on edit rules next to
'Gateway messages
for that domain to the Specified Address'. I would preconfig
this and
make sure it works(the other mail server will accept email
from both
your SM server and the Barracuda). And if the Barracuda
fails, add the
Barracuda ip address to the SM server and setup your RBL's.

Hi,
Yes it queues messages and uses the same rules as
SurgeMail.

Lyle knows Surgemail inside & out... but I have
another question, Dave:
Are you setting up the client to use a different
Port? Or is their system setup to only receive emails from your IP
addresses?
In other words, Spammers will still find their server if
it remains 'open'. How do you intend to restrict it?
