A quick read from Justin Mason(Spam Assassin).  The topic of backscatter has been going on not only here, but in other mail lists as well recently.

Part of the problem is that spammers are adapting real email addresses in the From field instead of randomly generated email addresses.

... and the system that cause the backscatter are older legacy systems...
... and systems that use SPF  & DomainKeys arent as vulnerable...
... and systems that Reject vs Receive-then-Bounce are better...
 
Surgemail is better than the others, but you already know that.
