Advice on a low power server/backend?

Hi all - planning on building a low power quiet server, it
will be on 24/7 and I'm concerned re not just power
consumption but the damn thing overheating and burning the
house down

It will be used as a myth backend, but also
as a mail and file server - light weight duties, only two
accounts on the mail server.

So I'm looking at:
VIA MM3500 Motherboard
VIA C7 1.5GHz CPU, VIA CN896/VT8237A Chipset, Integrated
VGA, PCI Express x16, SATA, LAN, 8-Ch Audio, Micro-ATX, 2 x
DDR2 (MAX 2GB), 1 x PCI Slot, 4 x USB2.0

2GB Kingston RAM

250GB Notebook SATA II Drive

Op.Sys : Ubuntu (XFCE)

SurgeMail : Incoming mail via POP3 collection - the SMTP
server will not be
exposed.

Will surgemail be ok on this configuration? actual usage of
it will be light,
but people have expressed concerns that the spam processing
could drag it
down.

Thanks - Lindsay

I'm running Surge on a box with 1 gig of ram, and it's a
PIII 1.3 gig
Celeron, we have about 65 active email accounts, and nobody
complains. It's
a dedicated machine, but it runs fine in that config. (One
of these days,
I've GOT to move this to an unused Xeon 3 gig box, sigh).

Uh, I'm running a Mac Mini with an external Firewire drive
and a half dozen
accounts and it does fine. But... What the heck is a myth
backend? That
might be a killer.

mythtv - mythbuntu to be exact (mythbuntu.org)

Its a linux based PVR - records TV. The backend side of it
has quite a low CPU
requirement if you're only recording Digital (DVB) TV. On my
desktop PC it
only consumes 2-3% CPU when doing 3 simultaneous
recordings.

That's what I thought. My existing server is a PIIIx700 with
512MB and it
copes fine, but it only runs Surgemail. How ever the VIA C7
is much gruntier
than that.

Lindsay,

I have been using an old T21 Thinkpad for SMTP/POP, HTTP and
FTP for some
time now (running XP Home); Three email accounts with the
HTTP and FTP up
only as needed. Power consumption is around 15 watts (very
low).
