Good Morning

Looking for a bit of advice, my license is up for renewal -- I have been using AVAST with Surgemail since RAV went away. ; Lately it seems that it is down more than up.  Not sure about renewing with AVAST, any suggestions?

I know some of you use Clam AV -- any help would be appreciated.

I run ClamAV with scavs.pl. I have a mirrored setup with
Internet email
hitting the B server at around 7,000 messages a day. The A
server
handles the customers outgoing email and I am not 100% sure
the volume
it handles, but I am sure it's less than the incoming
volume. I have a
Barracuda in front of Surge taking the brunt of the
onslaught from the
Internet and I also use the Sane Security and MSRBL images
spam addons
with ClamAV.

clamav works beautifully. in the several years we've been
using it, we
have not had one report of a virus getting through to our
600+ users.

and, although i am fully in favor of supporting the netwin
guys, we're
saving a bunch of money on license and maintenance fees.

you may very well want to consider it.

We are using Clamav and only hit one problem. The default command line for the command line scanner is too long for the command buffer in SurgeMail. I just made a short named command in the SurgeMail directory containing the full ClamAv call line.

It does pop up a command window every time it works, but that does not last long, and you can still work on the server.

Thanks

Wondering about any comments from Netwin regarding stability of Avast?

My only comment, is that in 3 years of using AVAST (the built in version on Windows Server), we've never had a virus get past.

For us, it works just fine. ; Easy to deal with.

Were you linux or windows?

As far as I know under windows it has been very stable. Under linux there have been a few odd problems, but as far as I know the latest versions are all good currently.

Specifically what problems are you referring to when you say "down more than up"?

Well the way it is implemented on linux is that if surgemail does not get a response for whatever reason in a reasonable timeframe from the avast scanning engine, it restarts the av_avast vpipe scanner. If it fails after 25 consecutive restarts it notifies the admin and gives up so at least the mailserver continues to run.

As such we need to look at the av_avast.log and avast.log files. They should be reporting the reason (or at least some info on the error state) as to why it failed to scan particular messages, and hopefully it will have stored the messages that it failed to scan as avast_failure_nnn.msg.

This will also tell us the reason this failed "this time" compared to "last time". Drop me those log files and any relevant failure messages and I'll do some investigation.
