Come off it Levi, it's not April 1st yet

The address limit is 4 Gig, when you start the computer the bios checks
everything that will need an address and allocates it, that stops anything else
using it. Then Windows (or Linux if you're that way inclined) starts and takes
it's piece. Which is what your link says in spite of it's stupid name
.............. you did read it I hope?

In fact, and someone on that link mentions it, you can have more than 4 gigs
of useable RAM on a 32 bit system but I believe it's a PITA so it's mostly
used by servers

Andy

Actually it's not that xp is limited to 4gb of address space... 32bit
operating systems are limited to 3gb of address space...

That should answer any questions. It is also why I run Vista Ultimate 64bit
on my laptop as it has 4gb of ram.

Yes I did read it. Windows xp is limited to 3gb of ram. It's an OS limitation not a Bios limitation. PAE doesn't exactly work well even with servers. 64bit to me is the simple answer. Oh, btw, I run 2 8800gtx's so when I run 32bit I get only 2.2gb of ram. I don't have much of a choice. I won't even go into our cad and viz stations.

Here is the problem. On my other computers if I hit ALT0169 I get the
copyright symbol © On the laptop I get a beep :-(

I have tried html © as well as alt0169 and nothing.

I have been through the Dell user manual as well as searched the net to
see if there is a special key sequence to activate the ALT key on a
laptop but I cannot find anything.

Oh, help!

Aloha,
Pam

You can always copy and paste from the character map utility.

Sorry about that last vacuous post of mine...started to ask a question, changed my mind, and it got sent because I accidentally hit the F9 key which means send if you happen to be in e-mail. (:
