I'm answering both here as I missed Michelle's post. The string works, if
necessary just tie one end round the camera and stand on the other, just
remember it's not a tripod so don't let go of the camera

Jane, is it possible the camera wasn't focusing on the main subject? 1/250
should be enough though it does depend on distance and lens focal length. If it
is a focusing problem there should be something in focus in the image, if
it's camera shake everything will have the same blur

Hi Everybody, and thank you all for your hints and tips. I am about ready
to throw out my 600 speedlight! I went to where the party will be today, at
the same time we will have it, and tried some test pictures. On the small
screen they look good (the camera lcd) but when I get them home they just
are not sharp. I am bouncing the speedlite off the ceiling, but also have
the lumaquest still on the flash too, so maybe this could be why. I am
going to try again tonite at home, I really like the "snap" I got with
electronic flash on my old film slr.

I was trying manual mode, F8 at 1/250 up to 1/500 and still my pictures do
not look clear (besides being mushy from the flash). I am wondering if the
600 speedlite on the top of the camera is making it top heavy. But you
would think with a shutter that high that motion wouldn't enter into it.

I have noticed that shooting in program gives the best results of all, so I
just may have to use that. One thing I really like, no matter what I shoot
in, when I use the speedlite and shoot at someone sitting at the window, I
can also get the scene outside the window, which is incredible. I am hoping
that the lumaquest diffuser plus bounce is what is causing the problem. I
can see I have to do a lot of testing tonite too. I do have a tripod so am
going to test that too, to make sure it isn't motion that is causing the
mush problem.
Thanks again for the help,
Jane
