Also note that the "length" of star trails
obviously
depends on the field of view you are trying to
capture. When I used my 50mm f/1.8D on my D70 for 30
second exposures, the star trails were there but one
can only make them out while viewing the photos at
70%+. So photos meant for the web would likely not
display much trail.
However, using something like the 70-300 at 300 would
be a totally different story. With such a narrow field
of view to begin with, longer exposure times can
result in star trails that are easily visible at web
or 4x6/5x7 print size as well.
