You say that you're doing an exercise with Manual Focus, yet go on to
talk about Manual Exposure. Certainly, if you 'zero' the indicator in
the viewfinder you should get a good exposure. I'd like to know what
lens you were using and if you had it locked at the smallest aperture.
Did you move it off 22 or 32 in order to take the picture? What metering
pattern were you using, what was the subject matter and did you meter
from your shooting position or from up close to the subject?

What exposure did the camera use for the 'bad' shots? It would be
interesting to know how different the exposure was from the 1/200 and
f16 that worked. Was this with studio lighting or natural light?

Lastly, is this the first time it's happened? Does your camera work OK
otherwise, shooting outside or inside with flash? There's just too much
info missing to be able to help you try to fix this. Any extra info can
help. You may even want to try resetting the D70 to factory defaults.
Hold the metering pattern button and the BKT button down for about 2
seconds. Both of these have a green dot next to them.

Karl,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I am totally new at this. I just got the camera and started the class without ever taking a photo. I was totally overwhelmed. The camera is in the shop right now, so I cannot get the info from the shots I took. The shots were in bright sunlight though. I will be getting the camera back (hopefully) on Tuesday. I have a feeling that my problem was operator error and not a camera error. My teacher loaned me a D-1 so I can keep up with the class. My second class was much better for me. Thanks again for sharing some tips. I will let the group know how this works out for me.
