I have the big gorilla pod and it has been useful. One night I was
shooting the moon but it was breezy. The tripod was moving so I
switched to the gorilla pod, wrapping its flexible feet around the
railing on my deck, and it worked great. My wife bought it for my
birthday, but she also bought a manfrotto plate and camera mount. Makes
for quick and easy installation and removal.

On another note, can anyone recommend a nice tripod for under $150? It
needs to work with my height (6'2") but also be usable for macro work,
and thus its legs fold out at extreme angles. It must be able to handle
removable plates / camera mounts (I forget the correct word).
Preferable it would have a bidirectional level as well.

Thanks,
Brent

Brent,

You might look for a used Bogen (Manfrotto) 3021. With some very
minor modifications the 3021 can go flat to ground level. It has been
a mainstay in the tripod market with parts still available for all the
locks and knobs directly from Bogen. I bought a used one 15 years ago
and still use when I don't have to carry it far or am working in the
studio. It has been a mainstay in the tripod market with parts still
available for all the locks and knobs directly from Bogen.
