Hi All,
I've searched through past-postings under this topic to no avail, but
as the new owner of of the 70-300VR lens (2 hours now), I'm dreaming
of how nice it would be to have a tripod collar for this popular lens
to provide a bit better balance.
Has anyone seen a third-party offering of such?

I had the lens for a short test and I respond: definitelly, YES, it needs a
tripod collar.
I would not let this lens hang on any non metalic body on a tripod without a
very realistic chance to broke the body or lens flange.
Also, consider the lens extends about 5cm (2") at 300mm.

Unfortunately, I analised it and don't see any place where an ipotetical
third party collar can be mounted.
So the only solution I see is an arm support like the eBay item
160105609177.

There isn't a collar available that I know of. The lens weight hasn't
been an issue for me and actually makes for a sharper picture, imho.

Renato,
I haven't had any issues with using it on a tripod and cannot agree that
it needs a collar, not on a D70 at least.

Probably you mean handhold or on a bean bag...
Let it 2-3 hours on a tripod fixed in D70 screw only, and will see...

I don't know or think it NEEDS a collar even if on a composite/non-metal
body.
The weight according to Nikon's site is the same as a 17-35 f2.8. So by
weight alone it's not a good argument or the 17-35 will need a collar.
By length as stated below even at its most extended length the bulk of the
weight is in the main barrel and close to the body, not the very end where
there might only be a few elements and no VR motor.
While Nikon can't get everything perfect I'm sure if there was an issue with
this lens on a body and it needed a collar there would have been more
reports of problems.
I have not scoured the 'net for any information on complaints but I'm sure
we would have heard something by now on this site, the D100/200/300 group,
and on Nikonians.
The risk of damage would most likely occur from handling and bumping into
things by mounting on a tripod would already reduce the likely hood of that
regardless of a collar. And even with a collar, if someone bumped into my
rig I'd concerned because what moron would come charging my rig with my legs
fully extended and not see me and avoid me?

I have used it on a tripod for minutes at a time but not for hours.
That would be a better test. Still, I have no concerns.
