This is an interesting discussion.

Slightly off topic, I've got a D70 and love it.

Given the fact that it works fine and I've got darned good lenses,
would upgrading to say a D300 give me a noticeable improvement in
image quality over what I'm getting now?

Anyone gone this route and care to comment?

Best to everyone,

John

I moved to the D300 a month and a half ago, my wife now has the D70.

Advantages I've seen:
Lots of Focusing Points (I love how focusing works on the D300, it is what
sold me)
Wider ISO range
Reduced noise at high ISO's
"Huge" LCD display
Better Controls (it seems so much easier to get the camera to do what I
want)
More Megapixels means you can crop more and still print

The interesting thing is that thanks to the D300 I've now learned how to get
the D70 to do two of the things I was cursing it for not being able to do.
I'd say that while I'm getting better photographs out of the D300, it isn't
totally the D300, a lot of it is my learning to better use a Nikon D-SLR.

Here are a couple examples of photo's I wouldn't want to attempt with the
D70. These were shot handheld with the 70-300G and Tamron 2x TC in low light.
