Use manual focus. When you need to. In some situations it helps a lot.

Low-light and macro situations seem to make it take longer to make up its
mind.

You've got the red brackets in the display that show you where the camera is
looking to focus. Try putting them over something at the right distance
with a lot of contrast, while focusing, and that may help a bit.

It also helps to have the camera set on Continuous Focusing. The camera will
begin hunting from the moment you turn it on. Single Focus does not initiate
focusing until you put pressure on the shutter button.

I found that if you were using the flash, if you set it to red-eye reduction it would act as a focus light of sorts. I actually tried it in a totally dark room and got good results. The lack of a focus light was a major fault of that camera in my opinion.
