Greetings all,

I am new to the group here. I just purchased a Nikon D40 and
love it.
I have been patiently waiting for Nikon to introduce a more

portable "prosumer" camera for travel and day to
day use.

I'm not sure my wait is over, but Nikon has just announced
the
CoolPix P5000 camera. It has great retro looks, stabilized
optics,
magnesium alloy shell, a hot shoe, an optical view finder,
and is
supposedly using the processing system from the D80 DSLR.
That is all
great news.

My discouragement comes from the lens starting at a
not-so-wide 36mm
and only reaching for 3x at the long end. I think the Canon
G7 has it
right with a 6x lens, but they too stopped too narrow at
only 35mm
(effective). The lens is also pretty slow at the long end
(f/5.6 I
think). Add to that, trying to cram 10Mps into a teeny
sensor and I'm
worried it will be plagued with noise at higher ISOs like
most other
point and shoot cameras.

Till the camera hits the streets and the reviews are done we
won't
know how good it really is. I am hoping for the best but
preparing
for a bit of let down regarding the narrow, slow, short lens
and
pixel-packed sensor.

Boy, that camera does look nice! My old CoolPix 5200 is
still
soldiering on, though, and I don't really have the itch for
a new camera
right now. As long as I have a working point-n-shoot, my
next camera
will probably be a DSLR.
