I recently purchased the R1 close-up ring flash kit for my D200
to photograph textures for use in 3D models. I have the Nikkor 18-70mm DX zoom
and the 18-200mm DX VR zoom. The recommended lens is the 60mm Macro Nikkor
f2.8. What advantages will this lens provide? I need the flattest and most even
illumination possible in order to create tiling textures.
with the 18-200mm Closest focus distance is 0.5 meters or 1.6 feet at
a reproduction ration of 1:4.5
the 18-70mm closest focus 0.38 Meters or 15 Inches at a reproduction
ratio of 1:6.2
the AF Micro 60mm F2.8 D has a closest focus distance of 222mm or 8.75
inches at a reproduction ratio of 1:1
the close up flash ring kit is designed for illuminating small subjects
specifically for Macro Photography ; Bugs , fine detail in fabrics ,
coins , close ups of flowers etc.
>From what i have read on this and similar groups the results often
appear flat. 1 impression I get is a couple of full size flashes placed
either side of the subject may yield results as good and often better
though it would be a little more complicated to set up.
Hope this helps Mike

Wayne, I have the 60mm and the R1C1 system and it works great. Only
problem, you need a UR-5 adapter ring for the 60mm lens which is
difficult to get. I have been waiting for one for over a month from
Nikon. You can use the setup without the adapter (one from the kit
screws into the lens) but you run the risk of damaging the lens.
Good luck,
Richard Maggio

I am palnning to buy this set also. I had planned to use it with the 105 mm micronikkor. Is that unsuitable? Will it work well with the 60 mm only?
