I have a 28mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.8 that I use a lot. They are very nice lenses and being prime lenses they have fewer issues than zooms. And I'll keep saying it, the 50mm f/1.8 is dirt cheap and a high-performance lens.

When I got my first Nikon DSLR I immediately picked up a used 17-35, which is more of a normal lens than a wide once you consider the crop factor.
