I am familiar with these lenses. Our local Nikon importer usually has
three or four of these lenses (600mm, 800mm, 1200mm, etc.) set up on
tripods in their reception area.

These are a medium to dark shade of grey and in no way can they be
regarded as 'essentally...white'.

Those aren't the lenses I'm referring to. I'm referring to the 'grey'
versions of lenses like the 70-200 VR, which are a very light grey,
fairly close to Canon's white (which is actually an idea Minolta started
in the late 60's, most every maker has or currently does make 'white'
lenses).
