I have actually done (almost) exactly that!
If you're doing the bulb and un-cover/re-cover the lens bit, locking
the mirror has no further benefit; by the time you uncover the lens,
the vibrations will have damped out.
I was doing a long-exposure study of a burbling brook - the "looks
like melted glass" kind of thing - 15-30 seconds with closed-down
lens and neutral-density filter.
