Hi there,
Thanks for the feed-back. The new 300 mm f/4 AF-S ED IF will likely be my next lens. Seems to be more to my liking than an close alternative.

Nick,
Just added a couple of shots taken with my 300 f/4. Take a look at
this sites photos, my little album "Bill's 70-300, the two squirels
were shot with the 300 on my D80, the young whitetail on my N90s. Both
were tripod mounted, should give you some idea of the ED version. The
AF-s will be at least on a par....

I am looking at a 300F4 as well

One thing I have read is the tripod Coller on the newer AF-S version
is nowhere near as solid as the older versions often resulting in
vibrations and camera blur in photos.

I don't know if Nikon have made improvements
thought you might like to Know
he has an article on Tripod collers from the same timeframe on the
page as well
