Stephen,
And remember not all Nikkor lenses are made by Nikon. Some of the
consumer lenses are made by other companyies, Tamron being one of
them.

I have read this claim before. Can you provide a reference to a source for
this information?

There are several Nikon's known to be Tamrons. The 28-200, 28-300 and
the non-VR 70-300's are Tamron designs. Note that tamron uses different
barrel designs for their versions. A straight comparison of the optical
design will reveal this (and the fact that the Tokina and Sigma 8-400's
are unrelated to the Nikkor).
In fact all of the 1st party 28-200's are Tamron-built, as are all but
the Canon L 28-300.

Such claims seem at least
somewhat plausible...but where can I find them
authenticated?
Does either Nikon or Tamron affirm
this? If so, were?

Neither will confirm. I know that at least one poster at nikonians.org
several years ago disected a 70-300 ED and Tamron 70-300 LD and
confirmed that the only differences are coating and the Tamron's better
focus helical. The 70-300G is known to have the same optical design.

I have never liked the phrase "known to be"....
Let me re-phrase my question.
Can you provide a reference to a source for this information?

Not for the Nikons, I can actually for the Pentax 28-200

Unfortunately the thread on the 70-300 disection on Nikonians happened
several years ago, so it's not to be found, and Nikon and Tamron are
understandably unlikely to publicly state the fact.
