YesI have gone form 4 to 32 and still get washed out images I might have to send the lens in and get it checked out.

I have a great camrea guy Isend my stuff to since Ihave old nikor lens for 30 years ago up to recent ones so I do have a lot of lens to work with untill I find out why it won't work kon the D100

Sounds like you have an "oily" aperture,where it stays wide open...Take the lens off & ; manually close down the aperture...If it does not close down, you will need to send it off to be fixed...
