Hi, Bruce.
The Canon 500D 'macro' lens attachment provides a comparatively
inexpensive solution to close-up photography with my 80-400mm VR lens.
It has the advantage over the other inexpensive option for close-up
photography, (i.e., extension tubes or bellows), in that it is small
and does not involve dismounting/re-mounting whole lenses. The 500D
just screws onto the front of your currently mounted lens. This is
also an advantage it has over dedicated Nikon Macro lenses, which are
larger, heavier, and much more expensive; but do, admittedly, produce
slightly superior results.
The 500D comes in a variety of filter diameter sizes from 52mm, with
my 77mm size being the largest and most expensive, and are designed
for use with tele' lenses of 70mm and above.
The action of the 500D is that it permits the mounted lens to be
focused at a much closer distance, producing a greater degree of
magnification of the photo-subject. On my 80-400mm lens, this produced
a more 'in-your-face' impression of quite distance landscapes, and not
so distanced engineering and architecture scenes.
If you're just getting into macro-photography, or if you rarely do
macro work, the 500D (or 250D) is a good option that won't break your
photo-budget.
