Hi,
I have kept the 80-400 that many people confirmed it to be a good lens -
now, I would very much like to have a good quality TC with it - I
posted to the D200 group, but didn't get a response. Somewhere I read
that no TC was available for this lens and the D200 = I hope this is
not true.
Would someone please give me info on this - I have the Kenko TC, but
it's poor quality on this lens.s
Looking for some response,
Thanks to everyone,
Dee

Hi Dee,
If you look over the lists posts for the last weeek or so, I think
your answer has already been discussed. I believe the consensus will be
that you'll get better results simply cropping your image by whatever
photo processing software you're using.
The Kinko's are pretty good units, the problem is that slower zooms,
such as your new 80-400 just don't work well with teleconvertors.

Dee, I don't know which Kenko TC you have specifically, so YMMV. From
the reports I've read on the internet so far, people have had
relatively good results with a Kenko Pro 300 1.4 mounted on a 80-400.
You have to bear in mind that adding a TC always reduces your image
quality a bit. More important, however is that you now have turned
your 400mm f/5.6 lens into a 560mm f8 lens, on a DX body, this adds up
to an effective focal length of 840mm! This means the AF system will
have a very hard time (if it is able to focus at all), and that good
hand-holding technique, or preferably a sturdy tripod, is adamant.
Don't even try mounting a TC2.0...
If you want to have a go at other converters that fit your 80-400, have
a look at:

Hope this helps,

Hi, Dee.
Keep in mind that your 80-400mm VR lens will act like 120-600mm
film-equivalent lens. I'm not sure why you would want to mount a TC
with that combination.
Have you thought about getting a Canon 500D (77mm) close up lens to
screw onto the front of your 80-400 VR lens?

I agree with Hayo. I have the Kenko DG 300 Pro 1.4x and while it works
with the 80-400VR and gives relatively decent image quality, autofocus
will become glacial even in good light as you have now gone from having
the aperture range entirely within the f5.6 autofocus minimum to just
about entirely above the autofocus minimum as you are now have a
112-560mm f5.6-f8 lens. VR can also have problems I've noticed
especially with low contrast subjects and I've had mine lock up on me
when I use the Canon 500D too.
