Thanks everyone for your kind and thoughtfull advice.
Now, I am not a professional photografer nor am I a wealthy
individual with a lot of cash to burn. However, I do like to
splursh every once-in-a-while and I typically do it with an
extravaganse like an F5, back in the 90's. In this case I
like the hyper ISO sensitivity of the D3.
About price, I have seen the D300 for about $1,800 and the
D3 for $2,500 (even though most stores list the D3 beween
$3500 and $5,000. At the former prices the diference beween
the D300 and D3 appear almost reachable.... Is this too good
to true kind of pricing?

I wouldn't touch the D3 at $2500. That is BS. I bought my D300 from
B&H. There are many scammers out there so be expected to pay around
$5K for the D3.

The D300 at 1800 USD is right, but not the D3 at 2500 USD.
Look at http://www.resellerratings.com and try to find the
ratings for any online store that claims to sell the D3
at just 2500 USD. You'll find that such stores are not
where you'd like to take your business and money to.
In your situation, I would suggest getting the D300, or
waiting (if the entire process works out well for you
with the F5) for the successor to the D80. Also remember
that the D3 being FX means your lenses will start giving
you different fields-of-view on a D3 - perhaps not what
you expect or want from them. Of course, you're already
experiencing that with the F5, so maybe that's not much
of a concern.

Prashanth
