This is where 'marketing promotion' language affects reality. The D300
is viewed as an upgrade for the D200, which itself was an upgrade to
the D100. All these were considered 'Pro-sumer' cameras, designed for
the advanced amateur (and the professional photographer in a pinch!)
The D3 is an upgrade to the D2-series bodies. These were engineered
for full-time professional use, which is why they are priced 3 to 4
times the 'Pro-sumer' bodies.
The D300 (as was the D200) are selectively marketed as 'Professional'
cameras, usually by Nikon-interest groups. But, as Gianini and others
have pointed out, there are great technical differences between these
two lines of Nikon camera bodies.
Still saving for the D3.......
