Camera fell on to cement sidewalk one day. Cursory inspection didn't
reveal any damage other than a cracked LCD protector. The 12-24 VR
came out unscathed, thank goodness. However, later I noticed
the left side of hotshoe was mashed where it had apparently absorbed
the shock of contact with the sidewalk. Any attempt to straigten it
met with no success - crude at best, it would not accept a flash unit.

I can buy the part from Nikon easily enough. Does anyone in this forum
know if it's a simple enough procedure for a non-techie type (me) to
perform?

Thanks,

Nikon would likely sell you the whole top cover. It is not a
difficult task with the proper tools, a good cross point screwdriver.

Stewart, if you have a pair of cheap side-cutting wire cutters, you
may be able to wedge the end into the groove in a good section of the
hot shoe and squeeze them closed to open up the groove without
stressing the camera or the rest of the hot shoe.
