Thanks to those who replied.
For Ed: the damage to the left side of the bracket bent it in two directions - squashed downwards as well inwards from the left side. Rectifying this would, at first blush, seem very possible, even easy. I used a pair of "dikes" -- diagonal cutters. -- to tty to reverse this damage without success. It's trickier than you might think.
To keep from further damaging the camera, I decided to R&R the hotshoe, doing it myself if it were a low level, non-technical kind of repair.
This would be the failsafe way of guaranteeing that all attachments, e.g. speedlight, Pocket Wizard, would work when needed.
If anyone else, especially anyone experienced in this specific replacement, wants to add their 2 cents, I'm still interested. Thanks.

I have replaced a few bent hot shoes on 35mm Nikons.
You are correct they are indeed tricky.
The metal is very strong, and the real problem is that while you are busy
prying on the bent part you are jeopardizing the rest of the camera. In
short the metal is much stronger than the plastic it is mounted on.
If you must straighten out the shoe on the camera - not recommended - you
must apply all pressure on the shoe only. You might try a small wedge of
steel squeezed into place by a channel lock pliers.
For risk/reward you are still better off replacing the shoe.

I got a spare parts for this particular flash hot shoe.
Parts will be taken from my defective D70.
But replacement means you have to remove bottom cover, rear cover and top cover.
I can also make a procedure to dismantle if you need it
