Thanks for your response. It is indeed a puzzle. I have removed the
rubber ring on the focussing collar. There are NO screws beneath
this ring. As I mentioned, there is only one set screw which is
revealed in the focus barrel when you extend the lens (close focus).
Loosening this screw allows one to unscrew the nosepiece - filter
ring. This reveals the first lens element held in place by ???. I
need some instructions on how to proceed from here.

There are 6 different manual focus 50mm 1.8 lenses made by Nikon.
