I just picked up a Nikkormat EL in great shape, except even with new
battery batt light does not go on and shutter 90. Any suggestions or
is something fried in the electronics? Also is it worth fixing (very
nice clean shape)

Are the battery contacts nice and clean? If so, please make sure the contact between them and the battery is good. If so, please check to see if the wires from the battery cage are good. If the answer to all those is "yes", then the real hunt begins.

2. Battery- what kind of battery are you using?? The newer batteries
may not properly touch the contacts due to the change in size. I think it
only uses one battery in the box. Don't try to use more to make up the size
difference. Remember 2 batts = 3V when you should have 1.35V / 1.5V
Remember, the original question was about a Nikkormat EL. The battery for this camera is not the same as for other Nikkormats. It uses a 6V battery that is located under a door inside the mirror box, NOT the button cells located on the underside of the camera that are used in Nikkormat FTn, FT2 and FT3 models.

Hi
Check the obvious:
1. Contacts - clean and bright,
2. Battery- what kind of battery are you using?? The newer batteries
may not properly touch the contacts due to the change in size. I think it
only uses one battery in the box. Don't try to use more to make up the size
difference. Remember 2 batts = 3V when you should have 1.35V / 1.5V
3. Electronics - a corroded wire or switch or worse a bad circuit
board.
4. A cracked battery box. You might try to activate using a looser
battery cover rather than tight and try some alternative moving of the
battery. Also visually check for cracks.
