I solved the issue. It turned out to be a really loose screw that was
preventing the lens to zoom through the entire range. I took off the
front assembly by removing the focus ring rubber band and removed the
screws underneath it (parts 1K115-819 on the parts diagram). The
assembly (part 18535-167) can be removed by unscrewing it from the
housing. I then removed the 3 screws (A2-17040FA) inside holding the
next piece (the second piece from the right in the diagram) and
unscrewed it from the housing. That is when I heard the screw come
completely out. I think it was screw 1K123-134, but I can't remember
for sure. I then replaced the screw and reassembled the lens. It was
a little difficult to thread the housings together because there are
multiple starting threads, but eventually I got them . I didn't
require any special tools and didn't have to disassemble the very
front-most lens assembly shown in the upper left of the parts diagram.
