Desktop" type="cite">Mike,

One of the ways you can tell that people have been using Nvu is the blank lines. I wondered if you suspected that I cheated and said I used it when I didn't!!!

Until yesterday (literally) I was using Nvu alone and getting no blank lines. That happens if you set Tools > Preferences > Retain original source formatting.

The problem with that is that though the blank lines disappear other lines become concatenated which makes them difficult to read.

I had lived with those files for some time and was doing some clearing up before finally publishing them (getting rid of   for example) and decided that the source did not look pretty. So I decided to go back to using Tools > Preferences > Reformat HTML source. Of course the blank lines reappear. I then passed the code through 'Lightspeed'. This is a freeware http://www.moo3.at/bladefist/lightspeed.htm program that Gerry Mulever mentioned on the forum some time ago.

Unfortunetely there may be something wrong with the URL:

"The requested URL was not found on this server."

Sorry to tell you that this site too leads to a site where
"File Not
Found", as well as do www.topshareware.com,
www.soft32.com,
www.popularshareware.com, etc.; all those links lead to
www.moo3.at.
Maybe the site is closed for weekend :-\ . Checking again
next week.

Thanks, Tony, for the link. As I have not visited Simtel
since I changed
my OS from OS/2 and WinNT to WinXP and Linux years ago, this
site did
not pop up in my mind. The file was available in one site
only, and it
was an earlier version. However, I will check what I can do
with it. (As
a matter of fact, I have not had any particular problems
with NVU. Maybe
this follows from my earlier modest experience with writing
HTML code
during the bad old Win31 days.)

A question to you all:

Although I have used Adobe Go live for a couple of years,
I'm a firm
believer in NVU and force myself to use it all the time. It
works and my
problem is not with NVU as such but with CSS. On the site
http://www.helene-vermot
e.ca you'll find that everything is fine with
the firefox browser but IE-6 give me a problem. I use a
class style for
a box with a fixed height and auto width or a fixed width
and auto height.

In IE my thumbs will be deformed but when I click on it it
will set
things straight and for that page from there on in
everything will be
OK. Even the linked document is OK.

How can I hack this thing? My CSS Mastery book gives some
clues but so
far the bug is there to stay.

Can any one take a look at my CSS and HTML sheets and
suggest something?

Thanks

John

I think you are asking the viewer's browser to resize the
images
on-the-fly. I would size the thumbnails properly in my image
editor
before uploading them instead of resizing them during
display. That
would make them display the same in all browsers. Let the
text flow to
accommodate different display sizes, but keep images at a
fixed size,
under your control.

Hi Jerry,

My first disign was with fixed thumbs and what have you but
it is so
much easier to have this in a style sheet so that you can
tweak the
overall layout. This problem came up when I was not
satisfied with my
blackbackground layout with white text and white borders
etc.... I
decided to make it easier for the future and redid
everything as much as
poissible with a style sheet. I even split my nav stuff of
to another
style sheet in order to deal will the general layout only.

In Firfox I have no problem and most likely in Netscape
neither.

This is something IE and thus must be hacked to work the way
I want it!

Only as a last resort will I accept to go back to the fixed
format
(either photoshop or direct on the web page.

Stubborn? maybe but that can be a positive also...

Thanks for your help

John

image distortion in IE (was: Nvu User Guide)

That is a very clean, visually attractive site.

I don't have an answer other than a neophyte's guess:
Have you tried
setting the doctype so that it will run in IE quirks mode?

Craig
p.s. apologies for branching out the subject header...old
habit...

 Hi all,

Today I was reading on the web a suggestion that you should
enter a
min-height: 5em; if you also want to enter a height: auto;
statement in
the class definition below. I tried it and it did not do
anything for me.

I asked myself why not let this height: auto; statement out
completely ?!

It works in IE6, Netscape and Firfox

 .thumbs { border: 2px solid ;
    margin: 0px 20px 10px 0px;
    padding: 10px;
    color: black;
    width: 120px;
    float: left;
    }

Any comments?

John
