Hello,
my Name is Bernhard Donaubauer I work for a producer of
windows and doors in
germany. We use OO as office application for our users and
programming
platform via Java/UNO to automate usertasks.
So far everthing is perfect! I only have one problem:
Printing in batch- or
cronjobs. I tried to use OO as a service on a linux server
but this had
several disadvanteges:
a) You have to install xvfb or something similar to get OO
started because it
needs a X server running.
b) It is almost impossible to debug problems in this
constellation. No log
files, no GUI!
c) Sudden problems! OO service does sudenly not work
anymore. Restart of OO
and xvfb on the server didn't solve the problem. In short OO
was in this
constellation not as reliable as I expected.
So my only wish for this ODF toolkit is the printing
capability. If I could
print or export to PS with this toolkit I could use ODF for
all our reporting
and printing needs. For such jobs I use latex till now, but
ODF would be more
modern and easier to use for our users.
Regards,
Bernhard Donaubauer

And to PDF too if possible. That would be really great

HI,
I don't want to wake you up but I think this all won't be
possible
without an X-Server because to e.g. place page breaks
appropriately OO
needs informations from the X-Server and maybe also the
GUI-part of it's
internals.
I could be wrong though and you can dream on which I'd love
because then
I could dream with you.

I also think that OO printing completely depends on X now.
This is in my
opinion a major restriction. Years after the industry
announced "das
papierlose Buero" (paperless office, I don't know if
this expression exists
in english too) I have to develop more programs that
generate lists and print
it than ever!
Printing and exporting to PS/PDF is really the only thing I
miss in the whole
OO application stack. Starting OO as a service is no
alternative as I
explained in my original post. I don't need ODF TK to
generate documents. For
this purpose I use XML and XSLT technologies that work fast
and reliable.

Yes it is a dream but it seems I share this dream with other
people.
I just used the chance to explain my major requirement to
developers and other
persons in charge.

Hello Bernhard,
we are offering a commercial StarOffice Server product which
supports
PDF conversion, many other kinds of Office document
conversion as well
as printing of Office documents.
The StarOffice Server is based on the OpenOffice.org product
but needs
no X server for document processing / rendering.
If you are interested in this product, please feel free to
contact me.
Regards,
Dieter
