Hi,Mr.Eilers:
I am zhao sheng, from ch2000, and we had a IRC chat last
Friday, but you
weren't there, and I would like to
join the odf4j project as much as I can, and they want me to
contact you
now,to get started, and I think I
have learnt some information on my own.
up to my understanding to odf4j is that we need to provide
java api
based on the odf for the applications(SW,SD
SC), and the project is to design and documente the api OOo
wants to
show to the developers. I am glad to help, because
I love java, and have experience on java programming. Can
you delegate
some work to me? thanks
I get the information in the IRC chat, that it is better to
work under
cvs. till now, I still can't worked under cvs.
can you give me some help to start? appreciate that. and
which tool do
we use for odf4j? guess eclipse, right?
looking forward to your reply.
Best regards
zhao sheng

Hi Sheng,
I will try to outline a few steps for you to get started
1. Check out the odf4j source code from the CVS. (I suggest
you to use
the CVS feature integrated into Netbeans, since that is
there where
you will build the source code)
2. Go through the source codes , the various packages to get
a feel of
what is already there. Remember that this will be time
consuming
activity, but you need to get a feel of what is already
there.
3. Then after consulting LO, BE and according to your
interests pick
up the area where you want to work.
4.Start coding after you have planned your task.
5. To keep a track of your progress, you can maintain a blog
similar
to http://odf4j.wordpress.co
m. This will help you in documentation as
well.
6. Write codes and announce to the community to get feedback
and all
Hope this helps you.
Regards

Hi Sheng,
You dont need a public key to checkout the source code from
the CVS
Are you using Netbeans to check out from the CVS? I faced no
problems
with it.
Cheers,

odf4j麓s intention is to provide a simple to use API for
creating and
manipulating ODF files using the java programming language
without the
need of a full OpenOffice.org installation. It麓s not going
to be used
inside OpenOffice.org it麓s intented to be a complementary
lib to be used
by java developers.

Can you delegate
> some work to me? thanks
Well because Amit already started working on the text
processing API I
think it would be good if you could have a look at creating
an API for
the Spreadsheet- or Presentation documents part.
For Spreadsheets there currently only exists a method to
create new
sheets from content provided as javax.swing.table.TableModel
data. And
we do of course need much more functionality for an useful
Spreadsheet API.
For Presentation documents there麓s even less there, the
only thing
supported right now is creating Presentation documents from
an empty
template or to load existing presentation documents and than
using the
support offered by the ODFPackage base class to get access
to the DOM
tree for the XML Streams contained in an OpenDocument file.
For Text Documents Lars Opermann started with providing a
few classes
for basic elements of text documents like eg. paragraphs.
Those
currently have an org.w3c.dom.Node member containing a
pointer into the
DOM tree for an XML Element of the OpenDocument file their
classes
referr to. I think we could use a similar pardigm for the
spreadsheet or
presentation API.
Probably you should just first have a look at what there
currently
already is in odf4j and than we can discuss ideas on how to
enhance that.
There is also AODL which is a library to manipulate ODF
Files using the
.net Framework which is quite more advanced than odf4j.
cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs anoncvs.services.openoffice.org:/cvs
checkout
odftoolkit/aodl
This .net library might also provide us with some ideas
about what we
might want to do in odf4j.
And well for working with Spreadsheet documents of course
using the
javax.swing.table and javax.swing.event interfaces comes to
mind but
this has to be evaluated if it is feasible.
> I get the information in the IRC chat, that it is better

To checkout source code for a first look it麓s enough to use
anonymous
cvs provided at anoncvs.services.openoffice.org
eg.
cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs anoncvs.services.openoffice.org:/cvs
checkout
odftoolkit/odf4j
If you also want to commit source code later you need the
developer role
in the project and must tunnel cvs over ssh. To be able to
do this you
need to create an issue in OpenOffice.orgs issuezilla
bugtracking system
requesting ssh access with your public ssh key attached. A
filled out
Joint Copyright Assignment Form (
http://www
.openoffice.org/licenses/jca.pdf ) is also required, but
you
probably already knew that.
Some general info about cvs can be found here for example:
http://www.openoffice.org/docs/ddCVS_cvscontributing
.html.en
Some information about tunneling cvs over ssh and on how to
request
commit access can be found here:
http
://www.openoffice.org/scdocs/ddSSHGuide.html
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Commit_Rights

and which tool do

There is a netbeans (http://www.netbeans.org/
) project file in the
source code. But if you are a purist you can also just use
any simple
text editor (eg. vi, emacs, notepad) and ant (http://ant.apache.org)
from the commandline to build the project.
