Once upon a time, I set this list up, after consulting the CAML team at
INRIA.

I was encouraged in creating the list and I was told more or less that
the CAML team considered pro-Ocaml initiatives that did not require
their work as a good thing.

So, this is why we're here.

I think that one problem here is in getting the whole archives of the
ML, so once a year I put on the Internet a clear version of the archives
of the ML, at the address that is usually shown in the footer of
messages - http://www.connettivo.net/cntprojects/ocaml_beginners/ .

BTW, I'm no longer the only administrator of the list: Richard Jones and
Remi Vanicat are there, too.

May I ask you the very reason why you'd prefer the list to be at INRIA?
I see several possible reasons, but I don't now yours yet. P
lease feel free to contact me or any of the admins privately if you
think that this issue is not suitable for discussion on the yahoogroup
itself.

I will be redirected to
http://www.connettivo.net/cntprojects/ocaml_beginners/ocamlBeginnersArchive_2006-11-05/
and there I got:

"Error 403!

/cntprojects/ocaml_beginners/ocamlBeginnersArchive_2006-11-05/
Forbidden!"

Ciao,
Oliver

Dear Ernesto,

thank you for your answer.
The main reason why I would prefer the list to be at INRIA (or at some
other academic location) is to avoid yahoo.
The other reason is that with an academic location you could use an
archive mailing list too.

BTW, why don't try to make put this malling list on gmane,
(http://gmane.org/), it would offer both the archiving, the easy web
searching, and more.

Ouch! Probably the provider restricted the access again.

I've made a quickfix. Thanks for telling me.

That's it: maybe we don't need to move all the people here to get some
advantages. I think that we're "gmaned" since a while, I noticed that a
long time ago.

What I like in this ML at yahoogroups:

_it is still there
_it is seldom down
_it has no spam
_the archives are searcheable

What I don't like:
_no privacy
_no downloading of the archives
_sorcery in chopping the mails

Of course an academic location would have more prestige, but that does
not mean reliability, e.g. serious anti-spam work, or not closing after
a year.

The point of privacy is TERRIBLY WEAK EVERYWHERE.

So far, I cannot see the real point in moving, apart from a political
one (i.e.: a university is better than a corporation)

But we can ask everybody about where to go if we were moving, and why.

I forgot to say that
_this ML that has at present more than 7,000 messages, so it's beyond
the capabilities of a small hosting
_we are hosted for free
_I set my options so to get mails as raw text, so I'm likely missing a
lot of ads.
