unicode issue can be tricky because it implies that number of char in

Yes i think so, but you need to know perfectly your unicode stuff
(collation et al).

Reading other mail, i should also told you that you will need to guess
the encoding of the filename, which can be pretty tricky... Maybe you
will have to access some low level function on windows/macos/linux to
get the encoding of each file...
